CAMALDOLI'S HERMITAGE
The hermitage owes its foundation to St. Romualdo, and you can reach it through an ancient mule track that climbs up to 1100 mts among the Appennines woods.
The monastery is placed downstream and was built by Romualdo to give hospitality to the visitors.
Don't forget to visit the ancient chemist's shop, built in 1543, where you can find old instruments used by monks to make decoctions and herb infusions.

ST. PIETRO IN ROMENA CHURCH
The present church was edificated upon the foundations of ancient romanic temples, and it's the most representative example of romanic architecture in Casentino.
The church has a rectangular plant, three aisles with five columns on the right side and five colums on the left one. Upon the columns there are capitals ornated with stoned animals, vegetals and humans figures.

LA VERNA SANCTUARY
The Sanctuary is placed on an Appennines mountain rounded by a large forest.
This is the legend of the Sanctuary: in summer 1224 St. Francesco moved to La Verna for his usual period dedicated to prayers and loneliness. Here he asked God to suffer the same pain that Christ suffered. God answered him and showed Himself to St. Francesco as a crucified angel and He gived him His stigmata.

PIEVE IN SOCANA CHURCH
The church is placed in Montemignaio. The present architecture is due to many progressive restorations that have alterated the original romanic appearance.
Inside the church you can admire many columns painted with tipicals 15th century frescos.

ST. MARTINO IN CASTEL FOCOGNANO CHURCH
The first holy place dedicated to the french saint St. Martino, bishop of Tours, is owen to the presence of Carlovingians in the 9th century.
The actual building dates back to 1700. It was damaged during the last world war: the actual bell tower was rebuilt in the years betwen 1878 and 1883 and the front size betwen 1945 and 1948.

ST. FEDELE IN POPPI CHURCH
Building in 1195 by Guidi Counts for the Vallombrosa's monks , the church is a very interesting romanic costruction.
Along the walls of the principal aisle there are six stoned altars in reinassance architecture, and in crypt there are the mortal remains of the Holy Torello from Poppi, patron saint of the country.

ST. MARIA DEL SASSO SANTUARY IN BIBBIENA
The Sanctuary derives its name from a big stone where, in 1347, the Virgin Mary shows herself to the little child Caterina.
In time past the santuary was a simple home for pilgrims and becames a convent just in 1495 with Girolamo Savonarola.
Here you can find the paintings by Jacopo Ligozzi, Giovanni del Brina, Paolino from Pistoia, an the fresco "Madonna del Sasso" by Bicci di Lorenzo.

ABBEY OF VALLOMBROSA
The Abbey is placed in the forest planted by monks and declared Natural Biogenetic Place in 1973.
In 1008 a florentine monk of noble family, Giovanni Gualberto, left with a brother his monastery in order to find a quiter place to pray. After he met St. Romualdo, founder of Camaldoli hermitage, he went to a place called Acquabona where it was placed a little house: he built some wooden rooms for the new monks so it was born the Abbey.
